2007 Hero's Luncheon
honoring

Carolyn Lanier

We are fortunate to have many among us who have provided inspirational leadership and given of themselves to better our community. In honor of these Lubbock heroes, the Lubbock Area Foundation hosts its Annual Hero's Luncheon to recognize their accomplishments.

On September 4th, the Foundation hosted its 9th Annual Hero’s Luncheon.  Friends and supporters gathered at Lubbock Country Club to honor and acknowledge the significant contributions that Carolyn Lanier has made to our community.

Carolyn Lanier is a woman endowed with idealism, talent, ideas, vision and the energy to see them to fruition.

In 1983, she became the founding director of the South Plains Food Bank. At the time, the National Network of Food Banks barely allowed SPFB to join because they considered it too small and insignificant.  Just 10 years later, SPFB was nationally recognized as the best Food Bank in the country, serving hundreds of charitable agencies throughout West Texas and Eastern New Mexico . Carolyn introduced the concept of food banks operating their own farms and many food banks eventually followed her lead. Under her leadership, SPFB established Second Helpings, transferring nourishing food from restaurants to soup kitchens, a literacy program for SPFB staff and volunteers, the community gardening project, Lubbock Green, and an in-house kitchen for job training opportunities and catering to other nonprofits. Years later, it was her vision for a global mission for the SPFB that lead to the creation of Breedlove Dehydrated Foods. Today it is the first and still the only charitable dehydrated food processing plant, sending food throughout the United States and the world.

Carolyn has served in leadership positions on the boards of many state and local organizations including Texas Interagency Council for the Homeless, Lubbock Community Theater, Lubbock Area Coalition for Literacy, the League of Women voters and YWCA. The honors and recognitions she has received are far too many to be listed here. Among them are recognition as a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow, an entry in the National Congressional Record, a Proclamation from the City of Lubbock, Women in Communication Headliner Award and Gold Award, Exemplary Food Bank in the Nation, 1988, YWCA Woman of Excellence, Altrusa Club Woman of the Year.

Since leaving the SPFB in March, 1997 Carolyn has created a retirement anyone would love to have. Because of the Florida “hanging chad” business in 2000, she ran for and was elected precinct judge in a landslide victory. She’s an avid bridge player, gourmet cook and world traveler. But her greatest joy is her wonderful family – husband Bill (now deceased), children Kathryn, Mark and Hollie and grandchildren Will, Gracie, Rachael and Rebecca Lanier, Joshua and Will Roberts and John David LaBarre.

Because of her achievements and contributions to Lubbock , the United States and the world, Carolyn truly exemplifies the spirit of the “Hero of the Year”.

Past Hero's Luncheon honorees include Congressman Larry Combest, sculptress Glenna Goodacre, former TTU Chancellor John Montford, United SupermarketsDelbert & Carolyn McDougalSenator Robert Duncan and U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.
